CAROLINE COBBOLD DESIGN
West Hampstead, London | Private Residence
A large semi detached residential five bedroom Edwardian house which had many interesting features. It had not been touched for 50 years and still had all the original Bakerlite light fittings.
Caroline installed a large kitchen extension with bespoke narrow framed aluminium sliding doors that open onto a 30m south-east facing garden. A dramatic 9m long skylight fills the kitchen with incredible sunlight throughout the day. A glass section of which returns down the far wall and cantilevers beyond the end of the kitchen extension. Housing a daybed / reading area, the warmth of the sun and protection from any draft makes this a particularly pleasant spot to relax in.
A self contained studio flat was created in the attic following the owner's requirements. This 3m high ceiling, 35 sqm open plan space has a separate shower room and can either be for staff or rented out. The exposed brickwork on the interior walls gives it an air of a New York style loft apartment.
Whilst renovating the property, Caroline Cobbold found a series of beautiful and original tessellated floor tiles which were repaired and retained. Original stained glass was kept as well as the original cornicing. A singular colour of paint was used throughout the common areas of house with the exception of a seagrass wallpaper in the sitting room, chosen to create a warm and cosy family room off the larger modern kitchen.
Caroline's signature style of mixing antique and contemporary items is particularly evident in this project and was achieved on a particularly limited budget.
